It never fails to amaze me how inventive criminals can get when trying to steal something.

Some of you may have seen the pictures in the news lately of a shelf of baby formula locked behind a cupboard with a padlock in a Spar in Joburg – all due to formula being stolen a lot as some mothers struggle to feed their children. Some stores also don’t even put their stock (such as razors) on the shelf – if you want it, you have to ask for it yourself.

But what are some of the most shop-lifted items in the Western Cape? How do criminals decide to steal these? What type of crime prevention measures are stores allowed to take?
